  1. Opted for the US3000, it was installed on Wednesday and I'm very happy! Thanks again for everyone's input and advice, these forums are great! I'm going to add a second in a few months and then probably move into a cabinet to add the third, potentially a fourth, pending how many panels I can add to my roof first.

    Well it has been a week of slow progress but finally the beast is back online. We have Gotten so intimate that I had to name it! Stima it is, 320P 14S 18650 pack with an average Individual cell capacity of just over 2000mAh. i am done with this battery and will be turning my attention to the other inverter.

  6. I took this pics this morning from 6:30 onward. Roughly every hour thereafter I took the next one.. 6:30 the sun had just come up. 7:30 8:30 9:30 Then at 10am I had to go to town and couldn’t take more pics. By 10:30 it was probably around 1500w to 1600w. Never mind the battery voltage at 8:30, that was when the kettle was on. What I am illustrating here is that this East facing array (6x330w) starts charging from quite early in the day. You want to avoid midday peaks as we are all limited to a certain number of watts. I can't comment on the brand name my response would be baised but vertical axis wind turbines especially cheap china models are know to break appart under high wind speeds due to the high inertia on the outside of the rotors there are very few successful vertical axis wind turbines available in SA the reasons for that is the high cost and maintenance required.

  11. This is starting to become a more common problem. I've not yet seen a definitive answer, but it seems that the power supply is starting and stopping. It could be many things: the power supply itself, something that overloads the power supply when enabled soon after power up, or possibly battery measurement resistors. You'd really need to open it up and do some fault finding. If you're not handy with electronics, it will need repairing; it seems unlikely to be something simple (assuming that you checked for things like battery voltage collapsing under load; measure voltage at the battery termin

  12. You could perhaps order one of these "electric showers" from the UK They heat as you use the water. Not sure if they are available in SA. https://www.screwfix.com/c/bathrooms-kitchens/showers/cat820272 But then again if you can heat the geyser with excess produced renewable electricity (if you produce excess energy) then it acts as as a "store" of energy and the hot water is pretty much free.

  13. I think so too. At R167K its about the price of 5 x US3000's and a 8000VA Victron Quattro. The Quattro obviously has a bigger inverter (6.5KW) and another big benefit I think is that second AC Input. And then there is just the chemistry differences, NMC cells will have a lower cycle life compared to Lifepo4. So with those things considered, I will still go blue

  14. A DC contactor where the coil is closed via AC would be ideal NO would power off grid NC would power grid tie. ABB make a DC compliant contactor or you could use a ordinary contactor with a snuffing capacitor.

  15. Both positive and negative DC can run in the same trunk. You just cannot mix AC cables and DC cables in the same trunk.

  16. No no no no..... your panels are definitely suffering from that underperformance bug I read about that was part of a bad batch. Start taking them off load them up (I will supply bakkie) forget the supplier/installer hes full of balls anyway. Come help me install on my roof and proper test for around 15 to 20 years I will give a proper diagnosis by then. Jokes aside you can have 40kw on the roof and if your load is 10watts thats what you will be supplied from Pv.   17. I have 12 x 325 w panels. In my case 6 face north(ish) and 6 face east(ish). My peak power comes at about 11:30 and there can be 3.2 kw coming off the roof (that's the highest number I've actually notedI might get a bigger number if I watch the power curves all day, every day) But this depends on the weather and, as others have noted, on the demand. If my batteries are fully charged and the house is just ticking over then there is no point in pulling 3KW off the roof (unless I feed back into the grid, and this doesn't make financial sense for me), and the system derates the panels and draws

  18. I can tell you what I'm doing now, since I'm literally in the process. I spoke to @Jaco de Jongh, a highly recommended installer. I told him what I wanted, at a high level, he asked some questions then sent me a quote. I then had lots more questions, and we went back and forth on Whatsapp for about a week, tweaking stuff. Now I have a final quote. With that information (and some help from @Tariq ), I can mostly complete the CoCT form. The rest, I send to Jaco, and he fills in (technical details, diagrams, etc).     3 Phase generator connection

    No, that's not going to work. The inverter wants to close its transfer switch and connect the input to the output. The outputs are tied together in a single phase system, but the inputs are 120 degrees apart with 230VAC between them. In all likelihood the inverter will refuse to use the AC input, but it could also blow things up if you try this. You'd have to either reconfigure the inverters into a three-phase system, or get a separate three-phase charger.

  20. I have done this.. The Volt meter came from Communica and the combo meters came from ACDC. I cant speak on fuses for the meters. All me meters are installed on the "outside" of the meters & breakers, so it did not occur to me to install dedicated fuses for the meters but I would be interested to hear other's opinions on this.

  21. My opinion is that it is not worth while to change it. Grid Tie is quite efficient and it's already installed and working. It does feel like a waste that you cannot charge while load shedding is happening, but if you do look at the actual numbers it would be not that much.

  25. I had one of those... but it broke way back in December 2012. This is what the big worm gear mechanism looked like: These door openers have a normal 230VAC induction motor, and as a result it will have somewhat of a start spike, generally about 5 times its nominal rating. I suspect that's the issue, it simply overloads the inverter. I have since thrown the remains of it away, but a it of googling indicates it has a 0.5 horsepower motor, which is just short of 400W. That would need a good 2kw kick when it starts. While many inverters (including the voltronics) can handle a 200%

  26. I found a solution to the problem courtesy of the supplier (solar-shop.co.za) so I thought it might be helpful to others with the same issue. 1. You have to use the cable supplied with the inverter. 2. Dip switches are 1000 on all batteries (assuming single group). 3. Cable is plugged into master battery RS485 port, not CAN. Works beautifully.
