Solarcrazy Posted April 17, 2022 Posted April 17, 2022 Hello.. I received a quote for a solar installation for one 8.1kw battery or 2x 5.1kw battery.. Can I take the 8.1kw version and later only add a single 5.1 kw if I need more battery power? The 2x5.1lw system is working out more expensive at the moment. Regards Quote

Regards AFAIK, if the batteries are from the same manufacturer you can mix if the BMS is compatible and the charge/discharge profiles are the same. Greatwhite Posted April 24, 2022 Posted April 24, 2022 I was also told you can mix the 5.1 and 6.4 kwh BSL batteries, but I've not see it in writing anywhere from BSL.suggest you email them and confirm. Unless your power usage is really minimal, 2x 5.1 will still get fully utilised. The other advantage is that if by some turn of bad luck a battery develops a fault, you least still have the other battery. Lastly, the 8kwh must be back breakingly heavy if you are racking yourself. If the 1C rating is important to you, just check thar the 8.2kwh actually is rated 1C. My 6.4kwh BSL batteries are, according to the datasheet I have only rated at 90A, whereas the 5.1kwh is rated at 100A.... I looked for a datasheet for the 8.2kwh BSL, but couldn't find one Quote
Solarcrazy Posted April 24, 2022 Author Posted April 24, 2022 Thank you, I spoke to an installer, they advised it is not a good idea to mix wattages. This has a challenge in the long term with BMS causing lower wattage to have dead cells etc Quote

I would also stick to the same size batteries but reason being if you keep adding batteries and you want to install them in a BSL cabinet, I’m not sure if the different size batteries dimensions are the same to fit in a standard cabinet, I recently installed 3 x 6.4kwh batteries in a cabinet and it looks quite neat.
