JRJ Posted May 24, 2022 Posted May 24, 2022 Hi I want to know if its possible to expand an existing 2x10kwh bank with another 2x10kwh from a different manufacturer? I have 2x LiFePO4 (48v 200ah) batteries and want to add 2x more LiFePO4 (48V 200ah). I am not currently using comms between the batteries and inverters (2x 5kw Deye Hybrids). My existing batteries have been in use since November 2021 - so concidering 600 cycles they are still "new" Everyone Ive spoken to said its not possible but I suspect its because they want me to buy more batteries. I presume same Volts, AH and Chemistry wont be a problem if you use it together? Thanks John Quote
jumper Posted June 21, 2022 Posted June 21, 2022 Age of a battery will change the internal resistance over time and it is important to have balanced batteries in a bank or you will have different batteries charging at different speeds causing them to become unbalanced. When you add a load to the bank you will probably find the new battery doing most of the work, shortening its lifespan. I don't think the issue is that it can't be done, I think the issue is that it's not a good idea, especially with what they cost. Quote
Derek Ramos Posted June 21, 2022 Posted June 21, 2022 @jumperso what you saying is that its not a good idea to expand your battery bank. That would seem to be a problem for most people that start off small because of finances and later add to the system. Quote

I would still say with lithium adding is worth it instead of selling and buying all at the same time. I just think not using comms is a bigger negative. If each bank can talk they will just work better. 600 cycles is not that old and one can always get the stats of each battery going forward. For lead acid it was a no no. At times one must rethink what we have learned over time. Derek Ramos 1 Quote
jumper Posted June 21, 2022 Posted June 21, 2022 I'm sure it won't be a major problem with modern bms, but I don't think you'll find a supplier who will say "yeah sure it'll be fine" and take on the liability when things don't turn out as expected. Quote
