My Sunsynk 8kw silence hack

I now really need todo this modification for my Sunsynk inverter as the fans are getting way too noisy.
The thing is, no one seems to have stock of the fans you listed. Does anyone have a recommendation for an alternative brand?
To import is possible and shipping wiil be only R500 for 5 fans. So if I can’t find locally, perhaps there are members here that may be keen on a group buy?

  • Here are temp recordings from the last 7 days. I switched on grid export the last 5 days to keep the MPPTs and inverter at max possible load during the day. It didn’t go over 42 degrees. Very stoked.

I have a 5kw in the garage. Even though noise is not an issue, the temperature of the inverter worries me. The minimum I have seen is 68°C and maximum of close to 90°C.

I will try this hack and see how much the temp drops.

Ideally you want to add a speed controlled fan which can be automated from your HA or in my case using an esp32 controller managed from my nodered.

Thanks, I'm assuming the fan will be pulling up air if you add it on top instead of blowing it into the heat sink.

yes on mine it is pulling air up over all the heatsink fins for maximum effect, the 5kw model has pretty decent passive cooling, but the left side where the capacitor bank is does heat up quite a bit if you have constant loads. And like yours mine is also in my garage, so there is not much natural airflow so the fan definitely helps.
Even a low flow rate fan will drastically bring down the temps as those heat sinks are massive :)

My update as promised, i bought 3 of these cheap fans. I was initially disappointed because they didn't move much air. I zip tied them together and placed them on top of the inverter.  The inverter runs much cooler than before, previously i had seen temperatures of over 90 degrees but not the highest i have seen is around 78 degrees. I am really impressed and will add another fan at the bottom to blow the air upwards.

Has anybody designed a 5Kw fan housing of some sort. I have a 3D printer but have no design skill at all and normally get all my prints from Thingiverse. I could maybe take the design the guys are using on the 8KW and see how to mount that?

Look on Thingyverse, there are some prints there.

If you reach temps of 90 degC you have something seriously wrong. The Sunsynk's fan switches on at 50°C and switches off at 45°C. At high temps it will derate the output to protect the components.

As I said in the post, the temperature hasn't gone that high since I put a fan. I don't know whether the inverter is reporting false readings but the heat sinks really feel hot to the touch during the day.

As I'm writing now, the inverter is reporting 54.5degC but the inverter fans are not on. Maybe it's just false readings, I don't know.

Hi, yes I found those and those were designed for the 8Kw but maybe I can use something from them. I can't find anything specific for the 5Kw.

Hi Slipx

Where is the AC temperature value gleaned from ?  I'm using your ESP code for the inverter itself ( version : around July 2023 ). I see DC radiator and transformer temps only.  I had look at your more current code, but didn't see an AC temp ? 

 

*edit*  I found this post and enabled the AC temp option in the graph on the Sunsynk web page.  It seems to match DC Radiator temp degree for degree ?  I watched them both drop as the geyser finished up pounding the inverter and battery and they seem to be 100% in sync :)

HI. I changed the sensor name a while back to align with some of the other integrations. The AC temp is the Radiator Temperature

What did you pay for each fan and delivery, i looked at 2 x 92mm noctua fans and with delivery it is almost R1000.
