3 Great Solar Automations in Home Assistant

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

Uploaded my latest video, a beginners guide to solar automations in Home Assistant.

The video covers three automations that I set up:

- Only Switch Pool on when the forecast predicts lots of power
- Switch off heavy loads when grid disconnects
- Change light bulb colour to red when grid disconnects and to white when reconnected

Please let me know what you guys think and if you have any other suggestions for automations.

The sounds should have improved a bit 🙂 and hopefully the flow is a bit better

Hi Sc00bs, great video!

In terms of controlling heavy loads such as the geyser in your video, are you using wifi-enabled breakers to do this (If so, which are you using?) or is the code changing settings on the inverter?

Hi @gluon21

There are two main commercial software platforms for smart switches.

Tuya -aka Smart Life etc. Lots of OEMers use Tuya platform e.g. CBI and then just label it as there own

Ewelink - Includes mainly Sonoff but there are a few other manufacturers using the Ewelink platform

Both require an integration to be installed to speak to Home Assistant.

I would recommend the Sonoff Pow20A switches for geysers etc and at around R500 not bad value for money, includes power monitoring as well.

You can also get smaller units of Aliexpress that I have used in the past.

Most light bulbs use Tuya, so you will probably end up using both integrations

Home Assistant is the brains for the whole things and runs either on a small pc, raspberry pi, virtual machine or such like.
