Growatt SPF5000ES Draining batteries well below cut off .... and other settings!

Hi all, I'm having problems with finding a setting that works for me.
I have an SPF5000ES inverter, 8X450w panels in series, 4X240Ah flooded lead acid batteries in series.
So my ideal setup would be to use as much solar in the day powering load and any excess for charging. If not enough solar then the slack to taken up by utility. Then charge batteries overnight if required. This would appear to be SUB on setting one. However, on this setting it just uses the utility bridge virtually all the time even if the battery is at 100%
If I select SOL, then it uses solar but takes from the battery if not enough and runs it down way past the low voltage cut off I've set. SBU does the same.
I've played around with battery settings in 5, by going from Flooded to USE and setting the voltage parameters, but it seems to ignore them?
What are other people finding? Thanks

PS Another curious thing is that if I going into the app settings, it always shows "battery" as first choice for power, even if on the inverter it's set on SOL?
