August 27, 20232 yr The roll out of new meters continues in Johannesburg. This article has some updates, but also feedback from an area where load limiting is being trialled. These reports are encouraging. “Load-shedding is pretty much a thing of the past. Residents are alerted to when the load-limiting window will begin and they turn off power-hungry appliances like ovens, pool pumps, washing machines and so on.” And “The benefits are massive. Our infrastructure is no longer being turned on and off constantly by load-shedding. Cable thieves and others who want to damage transformers, for example, can’t do so as they are not turned off and streetlights remain on. This all goes a long way to ensuring stability in the area and reducing crime.” So this seems like a good thing. Eskom are piloting & getting good results. If they can do this nationwide the effect will be no -trivial. If City Power can implement this across their area of supply, nobody need ever drink a warm beer or miss an episode of Game Of Thrones.
