Joshua G
I paid R500 to buy electricity, but R200 was deducted as service fee. It never happened before.
Bobster.
Is this Eskom, or City Power in Johannesburg? If the latter then this has been coming for years now and finally arrived in the most recent budget. The fees (there's actually two that total R200) but not the way in which they are recovered, was publicised some months ago when the budget was first proposed. In fact it was higher then, so the City has come down a bit, but also imposed a recovery method that requires those of us who use very little grid electricity to buy every month. Though you said "last week". COJ's new tariffs only kicked in on Monday this week.

There have been arguments that due to the bit in bold above, those who use low amounts of electricity, (Not just solar users) will be penalised unfairly, so indigents, and a lot of folks who cannot afford to pay more for electricity are going to be hurt by this new service & capacity fees and they make up a larger number of people than the solar users, who may then decide to migrate more off grid or totally off grid if they can? Which will then lead to even more revenue losses for COJ. So not good news for anyone ?

There is a means test for this and the value of your property is taken into account. This is not automatic. You have to apply, and you have to reregister every few years. But then you are spared the service charges, and you pay a lower tariff on the first 350 units you buy in a month. "Indigent" # "pensioner". The City sets the bar quite low.
