Pylontech or freedom won?

battery opinions

Hi guys.

Just been given the sales pitch on the freedom won batteries that are made locally.

Exactly the same system setup I’m looking for but he insists on only using freedom won’s.

They are more expensive. But aparentl (sakes pitch) far better. Reliable. Safer. Bla bla bla.

Any opinions.

I wouldn't discount the installer's opinion straight out of hand.

Mixing and matching various system components often comes with compromises and settings that have to be tweaked over time.

If I was an installer, and I had found a "recipe" that worked, I'd stick to it.

Presumably, he is also sticking to his guns as to the choice of inverter as well.

Only you happen to agree with him on that.

Take that as a sign.

Fair assessment.

I’ve simply heard a lot more about the pylontech than the freedom won.

So perhaps I need some other opinions or even experiences with them.

My opinion: FreedomWon has a MUCH nicer BMS. Their battery ships with an Orion BMS. Also the FreedomWon battery is 16 cells series vs Pylontech's 15s. FreedomWon has higher discharge rates. I believe 4kwh FW is between 35k and 40k, Pylontech is between 30k and 35k, so FW is maybe 10%-15% more expensive (it's been a while). And you get local support, with Pylontech you have to email someone in China. I would not dismiss Freedomwon out of hand... mostly because of the BMS.

It would seem Bluenova, ( another local manufacturer) also uses the Orion BMS.

Would that mean that you could directly compare these two offerings in terms of price?

Mmmmh, that is news to me. I was under the impression they recently developed their own BMS. Though google also found a page saying that some of their batteries are Orion-based.

The other difference between BlueNova and FreedomWon is the former uses Winston cells, the latter uses Sinopoly. The Winston cells have Ytrium in the chemistry which apparently helps in cold weather. I don't know, just repeating what I heard.

Oh, and one more thing. BlueNova rate their battery capacity at C/10. Which is in my opinion a marketing trick that borders on... let's say sneaky. So for the same kWh number you technically get more capacity if you buy FW.

what's your opinion on their battery ?

I don't know them well because until very recently they didn't have Victron support. They also rate their batteries at 1C. Haven't heard anything bad.

Does the freedom won and blue nova work with victron ?

Oh yes! FreedomWon worked extremely closely with Victron when DVCC was developed (DVCC, by the way, is Distributed Voltage and Current Control), and some of the first "bol" versions (battery operational limits, the internal name before DVCC was thought up) were built specifically for them.

BlueNova on the other hand is a bit of an independent. They aren't officially on the list of compatible batteries and Victron has never tested one of their batteries (but they have batteries from most of the others in R & D). But BN has nevertheless done a lot of work to make their batteries work well in a Victron system.

Victron definitely support BlueNova batteries - see https://www.victronenergy.com/live/battery_compatibility:start . BlueNova batteries, with newer BMS firmware, also support the DVCC feature - it works well on my system 😉

Haha! OK, I should have checked before I wrote that. The rest is still true though. Sometimes the manufacturer does the integration work, sometimes Victron does it, and sometimes it is a team effort. For the big battery makers there is literally an example installation in R & D. This includes BYD, Pylontech, Discover, LG, and so forth. FreedomWon and BlueNova are two companies that did the work themselves, but they did an excellent job.

I'd demand a link to testing data to prove the claims of reliability, safety and so on.

Pylontech have been tested (ongoing) by an independent lab https://batterytestcentre.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/Battery-Testing-Report-7-September-2019.pdf and are doing very well...

Given the battery industries very spotty history with false claims and shoddy products, and given how poorly some of the other batteries in that same testing report above have done - I would be extremely hesitant to assign any non-verifiable claim any value whatsoever, especially a claim by a sales person or manufacturer.

If the batteries are meant to be more reliable then they must prove it somehow, if they can't then its as good as a lie.

Freedom won is the best hands down, pylontech is amongst the worst!

I'd say go with the overall quality of you're system, if you have a victron or sunsynk I'd go for a freedom won, If you have a mercer/ellies etc go for a pylontech.

A happy medium of quality slightly worse then the freedom won and slightly more expensive then a freedom one I'd recommend speaking to you're installer about a BSL battery.

There must be something you know about Pylontech that we dont, do you care to qualify why its such a bad battery?

This is most intriguing, you say BSL is worse rhan FW and its more expensive than FW, and you reccomend it??!!
