Posted March 30, 20205 yr We have 8 panels in one string. I've found a lot of earthing info on this site, but can't find a specific answer to this question: Does one really need to earth each individual panel, or is it OK to earth just one and have the mounting structure effectively earth the rest (aluminium / Renusol rails), or maybe earth even second or third one (in which case you may as well just do each one). Many thanks - for future answer to this and also all the other good info you guys have posted, this is one of the best sites I've found in ages and I find myself checking "new posts" every time I have a free minute

I earth my rails and connect all the rails together. We were suppose to attend one of the first SANS courses on PV regulations from the 10th of April, but its now been cancelled. Once we attended, I will give feedback on what the regulations require.
March 31, 20205 yr I earth looped each panel as there was not conductivity to the rails due to the anodizing of the aluminium. If there was conductivity from the panels to the rails, I would have just earthed the rails. But not sure what the regulation says.

But I guess it will depend on what type of panel clamping hardware you use. Goodwe recommends a maximum resistance of 20kOhm between panel and ground.
July 12, 20204 yr There are solutions to ensure anodizing doesn't cause a problem and that all panels/mounting have a conductive connection, however they don't seem to be very popular or readily available in the country for whatever reason. Or maybe its just a case of people not being aware that it is an issue or that there is a solution?http://www.we-llc.com/products/weeb-washer Edited July 12, 20204 yr by mmacleod
July 13, 20204 yr Managed to locate at least one local place that has these now:https://www.lumaxenergy.co.za/product/lm-cgw-2/https://www.lumaxenergy.co.za/product/lm-sgw/
