Disposing of gel batteries

Featured Replies

Hi all

After installing my DIY LifePO4 battery, I need to get rid of my 8 200Ah Ceil Gel batteries. They probably have 35% of their capacity left.

What's the recommended procedure? Take them to a scrapyard?

Cheers

Just my luck I'll come back to a pile of batteries and no bakkie😀

Indeed, shoppers are becoming more discerning. There used to be a time when you could dispose of small amounts of building rubble in this manner, though you do have to box it up so it is not too obvious.

There was a few posts a month or so back about the best prices for your used lead batteries. But yes you sell them for scram metal.

Edit: Gels still have lead in them, yes?

Morning.

Sitting in the same boat.

I was wondering who close by needs batteries for a startup and then give it to him.

The price I got was R7/kilo for dry batteries IOW no liquid in them. Where do you dump the liquid safely ?

Mine is 68kg wet weight but because they are sealed i don't know dry weight.

If i get R350 per battery I will be able to buy some beer

The scrapyard and they should be able to dispose of any liquids safely. We got a nice little sum(R) for them.

I'll give them a try. Might start with 4, and keep 4 for emergency backup.

I have never had to drain lead acid batteries before recycling them. They simply weigh them as is and you are paid out on this weight..

Put them on the back of your bakkie, drive into town. Park somewhere in an area known for alternative shopping. Go and have lunch.

Hi Wesley

I recently disposed of Gel batteries at SA Metal Group in CT, but they have branches all over. Decent price/kg, just have ID and get your cash.

Cheers
