Hi

I just bought this inverter. I see that the DC PV operating voltage is 120VDC. What is the minimum number of panels required to get the solar side working? I currently have 4 x 330watt panels.

Reference: MUS-SOL-I-AX-5NB

Condition: New product

Rated Power 5000VA / 5000W
Maximum PV Array Power 4500W
MPPT Range @ Operating Voltage 120VDC~430VDC
Maximum PV Array Open Circuit Voltage 450VDC
Maximum Solar Charge Current 80A
Maximum AC Charge Current 80A
Maximum Charge Current 80A

Aren't most panels 32VDC nominal?

Good day.

Well please give us the solar panel details. model number and make

Lets say you have 330w Canadian solar panels then the Vmp is around 37v.  3x 4= 148V all 4 panels in series you should be fine if you do not have shading.

I think you should add 2 more in series if you can afford it 37x6= 222v

Usually the inverters with the high voltage MPPT start up voltage is  150v.

I have noticed that my system start to charge the battery when the solar voltage is around 125v.

330 x4= 1320 *0.8(for losses) = 1056W.

Your inverter can handle 4500w. 330wx16x.8 = 4224w. (16x330=5280 but you will have cable losses as well as irradiance and temperature losses)

You can have 8 panels in series and 2 strings in parallel total of 16x 330w panels

My personal observation, without ever owning one of these, is that you need 6 panels as the practical minimum. If they are 72-cell panels (as most are these days), then you might get away with 5 panels.

Edit: that's despite the fact that mathematically, it looks like 3 panels would be enough to at least get some production.
