YellowTapemeasure
Is there any reason why you / your daughter chose those two breeds specifically? Have you considered temperament and maintenance of the pup (and soon to be adult dog)? Would a short-haired breed perhaps be lower maintenance (ticks and fleas, cleanliness and overall appearance)? She saw one at the friend's place and she is adamant that she want one just like that too. I have a pitbull and we have a mobile grooming guys that comes every second week, so, maintenance will be covered. Very few people actually know, understand and are prepared to go through the rigmarole and cost involved with keeping them that way. I take my hat off to poodle owners, they clearly invest a great deal of time, money and energy into keeping their dogs in tip-top condition, thumbing their noses at the second law of thermodynamics. Personally, if I were looking at a small dog as a companion for a child, I would prefer a short-haired low-maintenance breed like a Pug, Boston Terrier, French Bulldog, or Dachshund. If longer hair were a must, then the West Highland Terrier would be a consideration. Energy-Jason

Has she seen what a West Highland Terrier looks like though? IMHO even cuter and a more even temperament, although far rarer.

You will need something that will be subservient to the pitbull though, so anything with "terrier" in it''s name would probably be unsuitable. hoohloc

I think she just want a hair that she can brush, she is not happy with the pitbull because of the short hair YellowTapemeasure

And very "girly" I honestly think that your biggest problem would be socialisation with the pitbull. You would need to be very careful, otherwise the vet / hospitalisation bills would mount up. You need a dog that isn't cheeky and that submits to the Pitbull, and is happy to fulfill a subservient role in the pack. So IMHO basically all terriers are out, because they think that they are huge even when they are small. Eish! that is my biggest worry, thought the smaller they are the more submissive and will get along with the pitbull.

It depends. Terriers have huge hearts, extremely courageous. Jack Russells have been known to dominate German Shepherds.

I'm personally not a very big fan of giving pets as gifts because I saw it so many times that the pet become somebody else's responsibility after a while. But ja that is just me. Thought about that already and since we already have one dog, the second one will not a problem. As long as they get along, I don't want them to fight YellowTapemeasure

She will not see the difference Yep, they are both very cute. Huge difference in coat (and maintenance) though, and temperament. A Maltese's coat is soft throughout, a Westie has two different coats, thick wiry waterproof coat on top, and soft coat underneath. It's easier to maintain and a far more resilient dog, especially outside, bred to be a rat / mole catcher, that's why it has such a sturdy tail, when it gets stuck in a hole, you can pull it out by its tail. The only issue remains the socialisation with your current terrier. Either way, a spayed female perhaps? Assuming of course that you have a fixed male pitbull? I did well to come here before getting another dog It's not a panacea, so no guarantee that it will work, but generally dogs will socialise far easier and better if they are of the opposite sex (and being fixed is pretty non-negotiable),

They are somehow very well funded, have great volunteer staff and you will 1) give a new home to a dog that lost a home 2) get a healthy, well cared for animal. Take your current dog. They will put the two in a secure area, with observers, to see how they get on. They also like to do the same with you, see if the dog shows signs of taking to you or particularly not liking you. https://woodrockanimalrescue.co.za/ or see their facebook page. NB! They reserve the right to inspect your property before handing the dog over. Edited June 28, 2021 by Bobster hoohloc
