Portable power inverter on Generator change connection

Hi

Is it possible to use a portable inverter and a generator interchangeably with the same change over connection…

There is a manual transfer switch to switch between utility and back up…the DB is setup to select loads for all sections in the house i.e certain plugs, fridges, geyser, lights etc…

The connection has two plugs that plug into the generator (16A plugs just to split load). Power goes out, switch circuits off at DB, start generator, change over to back up, select loads on DB…

Same scenario but can one plug in a inverter just to run lights…power goes out, circuits off at DB, plug in inverter, change over to back up via manual transfer switch, light circuit on at DB (using LED lights on a 1kw portable power inverter)….
