Creative here - trying to DIY a 5kva 48v lithium setup

Featured Replies

Hi all. Found my way here (like most of SA I'm sure) and have been reading through a lot of threads. As the title states - creative, so I know my way around images and colour, but not so much numbers and electrics. I have a ton of questions regarding how I've set things up so far, as well as the settings on the inverter, but if I need to down tools and get someone qualified to come through and finish it off, then I'm happy to do that.

I used to run a Mecer 600w 24v UPS with 2 x car batteries as I only needed to run my laptop during LS, but 3+ years on and it's become the WIFI-only power backup.

I recently bought a Mecer SOL-I-AX-5VP inverter and a Pylontech UP5000 battery. I think the initial total power needed was 1600 watts if I added up everything we wanted to power - Gaming PC + 2 monitors, printer, wifi, laptop, 2 x TVs, Xbox, floor standing fan and fridge. The main one is the PC (750w + 200w for monitors) as it is used for work and I need to be able to run it uninterrupted as long as possible, and be ready to rinse and repeat every day.

The current plan is to run the inverter and battery as a standalone system and run extensions to the things I need to power. I wired it up with the help of a good friend, but his system is different to mine, and I want to make sure I'm doing things correctly.

Please see the attached images showing the setup in its current state. Once things are good, I plan to neaten it all up.

  • Power to the unit comes from a plug on the opposite side of the wall and I used a 5m 16A extension
  • AC out is 2.5mm 23 amp twin and earth (overkill?) running to a double plug from which I plan to run my extensions
  • Battery cables run through a Gewiss 100 amp breaker switch

When I first turned it on, the fan ran constantly while charging the battery (I hadn't made any changes to the inverter menu settings when I first turned it on). This ran for a good 20 minutes and when it seemed like it was done charging it went straight into error / fault code 08 - 'Bus voltage too high', so I switched everything off. Friend advised I changed the program setting 02 (Maximum charging current) to 10A - it was on default 50A. It hasn't thrown the error code since, but I have no idea what the change did.

Other than this, all the other program setting are on factory default. They are as follows:

  • 00 - ESC
  • 01 - Utl
  • 02 - 10A
  • 03 - APL
  • 05 - AGn
  • 06 - Ltd
  • 07 - ttd
  • 09 - 50Hz
  • 11 - 30A
  • 12 - 46v
  • 13 -54v
  • 16 - SNU
  • 18 - bON
  • 19 - 1-EP
  • 20 - LON
  • 22 - AON
  • 23 - byd
  • 25 - FEN
  • 26 - 56.4v
  • 27 - 54.0v
  • 29 - 42.0v
  • 30 - Ed5
  • 31 - 58.4v
  • 33 - 60
  • 34 - 120
  • 35 - 30d
  • 36 - Ad5

Regarding the battery, do I need to earth it, and if so, to where? Should I raise the battery, and is it necessary to have some sort of ventilation in the cupboard?

Do I need to connect the battery to the inverters Comm Port? I see the battery also has these ports.

Lastly, would I need to make any changes to the ADD switch on the battery?

Any help would be appreciated and if I need to get a pro in, then if someone in the Southern Suburbs CT could help me please DM me.

TIA🙌
