  1. Update: I've just returned from a site visit and instead of 50 people using the system, there are now 90 people using it daily. They have used 244000l of hot water in just over a month (no water restrictions there!) so we are pretty chuffed that the system has held up with the added demand.
  2. Yes, there is a small Grundfos circulation pump doing that. Other than the tanks, everything is in pairs, one duty and one standby.
  3. Some might find this interesting. We've just completed a hot water system in the Delta for the staff village of a guest lodge. 4500l Thermocube Tank with heat exchangers. Heat supplied by 2 x 24kw ITS heat pumps and 12 x 20 tube evac solar tubes in series. A 300m ring main feeds 24 tap off points supplying hot water for about 50 staff at a time and their kitchen and the camp laundry.
  4. Late reply but yes. In principal, it will work fine. If on a thermosyphon system, care must be taken to retain the 'heat rises' rule in the way the panels are set out. In a pumped system, I would pump the water into the flat plate first and then into the evac manifold. I would put the sensor in the evac manifold as it would get hottest.
  5. Aah! So that is where I get my cross-trade cock up skills from... Being a farmers son! I remember being taught to change the plug before being able to tie my shoe laces. I still can't tie my laces properly.
  6. Small world! Alan is my dad. Was the bypass valve operating like a manual mixing valve? The thermostatic one works well to ensure an adjustable set temp flows from the preheat system.
  7. Hi Chris, I hope it is not too cold there in Graaffies. We share many acquaintances. I went to Union at the same time as Dave Stern, Jason Jacobs etc. I was in Jennifer's class. My name is Russell Collett. I would need to have the model number to get a concrete answer from the agents but - They recommend not feeding the gas geyser with very hot water. They are usually fed by solar heated systems and in that case, you would always install a thermostatic mixing valve after the solar, before the gas heater. I guess, as long as you set the thermostat on the electric thermostat to around 50 then it will be fine. It seems a pain to waste that free energy though so maybe installing a mixing valve after the pre heat is a better idea.
  8. Sounds good. I am thinking forward to your control of the flame. If it is a permanent pilot type heater then by closing the gas valve when you don't require the heat then you will have to relight the pilot before use the next time. Would it not be better to plumb in a bypass of the heater? I'm sure that once you have a insulated storage vessel you won't be using the gas as much (especially in the summer) in which case periodically having to light the pilot might not be a big issue.
  9. I'm sure that with that type of collector then your plan to feed your gas heater will work. Incidentally, do you know if you gas heater modulates? ie, reduces it's flame if the required delta T is small. Yes, looking at your pictures again, you are correct, the top one is the same as what I advised. I was just thinking of what brand of geyser would work with that set-up. I haven't seen one with the ports available like in the top pic but a HeatTec is similar to the middle pic.
  10. I had a conversation with a flat plate seller who explained to me that installing 2 smaller flat plate collectors rather than 1 large one (equaling total surface area) would improve the overall efficiency. He wasn't able to explain it in a way that I understood over the phone. Is this true and why so?
  11. When fitting conventional pool panels, for double story installations, if the client has a 0.75kw pump then we advise to change for a 1.1kw. Unfortunately, this also means advising to upsize the sand filter from 3 bag to a 4 bag filter.
  12. What old geyser do you have? If the port is available, I would use the middle picture setup but the return line from panel to tank will enter at the midpoint and not at the bottom. (where the current port is capped)
  13. An induction geyser might also be worth investigating. Search google/youtube for video's explaining the technology behind them and benefits of installing such a unit. .
