The largest manufacturer of sodium ion batteries now relies on the color pigment Prussian blue. The electrodes are to be optimized with the inorganic material. Can this type of battery establish itself worldwide?

The US battery manufacturer Natron Energy plans to produce 600 megawatts of battery power annually from sodium-ion batteries . The company sees the use of Prussian blue (also called Berlin blue) as the key to being competitive with lithium-ion batteries. The material, which is known for its deep blue color, is to be used in the electrodes. The Swiss producer Arxada secured the order for the supply of the inorganic substance with the chemical name iron(III) hexacyanidoferrate(II/III) in a supply contract. The color pigment can be produced in pure quality and at low cost in the existing fine chemical plant in Basel.

Natron states in a press release that the quality of the batteries is significantly increased with the blue material. The company describes the battery performance as “groundbreaking”. In addition, tens of thousands of charging cycles and short charging times are possible.

Advantages of Sodium Ion Batteries
A major advantage of sodium technology is the elimination of environmentally harmful and expensive materials . While lithium-ion batteries are made of cobalt, nickel, lithium and graphite, sodium batteries mainly use sodium, which is abundant on earth. It is the sixth most common element on earth. Each liter of seawater contains an average of 11 grams of sodium ions.

In addition to the availability of the materials, sodium-ion batteries have another advantage. They can be charged and discharged quickly . In addition, the charging performance remains stable over thousands of cycles. Furthermore, they are considered to be extremely safe because they cannot explode or burn. This makes them particularly suitable for applications in special areas, such as in data centers.

The disadvantage, however, is that sodium-based batteries have a lower energy density than lithium-ion batteries.

The largest battery producer in the world also wants to build sodium batteries
The advantages of sodium batteries also seem to convince the world's largest battery manufacturer. The Chinese company CATL, which also supplies many German automobile manufacturers with batteries, presented its own sodium-ion battery last year . This can be charged to 80 percent in just 15 minutes. Although the energy density is around 10 percent lower than for comparable lithium batteries, this is set to change in the coming product generations. Unlike the Natron batteries, the CATL batteries use the material Prussian White for the electrodes. Series production of the batteries is planned for 2023.
