I've just replaced my lead acid batteries with a single Pylontech UP2500 on my RCT Axpert VMiii 3kW inverter.

Comms between the battery and the inverter are fine via custom RS485 cable. The flashing battery symbol on the inverter confirms this. The battery type setting 05 is set to PYL. The battery charged fine until about 96% and then the error 69 (alarm) came up. I understand that this is a normal warning, not error, and can be rectified with a firmware upgrade.

My concern is that when this happens the amber ALM light on the battery comes on(solid). After a short while this changes to the red PROTECT light (solid), then the battery seems to reboot and the error 69 disappears for the little while, the battery seems to charge for a few seconds and the entire cycle repeats.

I've switched the battery off because the alarm and protection light, in particular, is concerning. Does anybody have any advice? Is this normal on a new battery until the cells balance? Or is this normal with the error 69? Or is there and issue with the battery and I need to return it?

The behavior you're describing with the Pylontech UP2500 battery is not normal and could be indicative of a problem with the battery or the inverter.

While error 69 may be a normal warning that can be rectified with a firmware upgrade, the amber ALM light changing to the red PROTECT light, followed by the battery rebooting and repeating the cycle is not expected. It could indicate that the battery is experiencing an issue with overcurrent, overvoltage, or other electrical irregularities.

I would recommend contacting the manufacturer or supplier of the Pylontech battery and the RCT Axpert inverter for further assistance in troubleshooting the issue. They may be able to provide guidance on how to properly use and maintain the equipment, as well as options for repair or replacement if necessary.
