Notes:

  1. I don't believe that City Power will be able "to see what electrical appliances people are using". Note the distinctly untechnical language the author uses. They will be able to see what the consumption is at any given meter. That's what smart meters do.
  2. It would have been better to directly quote City Power, because somebody is going to read this article and start protesting that it's none of City Power's business what he uses electricity for, that this is the state snooping on us and etc.
  3.  When this was originally proposed the idea was that smart meters would be linked to a cell number, and the request to reduce consumption would be sent by SMS. 

I can see some potential problems with this, but it's an interesting idea if they use it to just turn off high-consuming properties. 

The implication for us PV users is what happens if it's an overcast day like today, and you are pre-emptively charging your batteries, and you are requested to reduce load. OK... maybe not a problem if you do reduce load and they maintain the grid connection.
