Mecer 5kva not picking up mains

I have a Mecer 5kva hybrid inverter that has just been installed. I am having a problem that when power returns it's not running through the inverter and charging the batteries, the inverter only picks up the mains and charges the batteries when we turn the kettle on which activates the mains through the inverter. Does anyone have any ideas if its a setting issue or a hardware issue?
