Thanks for this, very useful and informative. Pictures also useful. Did you come across any cheap data logging solutions? You could try an Arduino (which has built in voltage ADCs), and maybe add a current sensor (around R100-200) which converts current to voltage using a hall effect sensor. Your hypothesis about the lack of a battery balancer leading to the imbalance sounds pretty plausible.
