February 2, 20233 yr There are some interesting numbers in this article. In 2022 the importation of batteries increased by 313%, imports of PV only 54%. Bobster's 1301981th theory: Businesses put in grid-tie systems, got their tax breaks, saved a packed on municipal bills, now are upgrading to off-grid or hybrid solutions to mitigate against load shedding. In the meantime this also goes some way to explaining why folks are finding the wait for batteries to be a long one. Big businesses (shopping mall owners, healthcare groups) will put in way bigger orders and the risk to the importer is low.
February 2, 20233 yr I have noticed the same trend from pretty much everyone I know who has installed a system of sorts over the last 1.5 years. It was originally just batteries and inverters, people were happy to charge off Eskom and just be loadshed proof. That sentiment has changed now and the grid is seen as extremely unreliable so most people are factoring solar in to charge the batteries. Its almost as if the penny has dropped and everyone has realized that we are on our own here, if you cant generate your own power and at least harvest rainwater then you have to take your chances with the municipalities/government doing their jobs...
