June 2, 20233 yr Hi All, Am new here and new to solar. I have a new installation - Sunsynk 8kwh, hubble am5 5kw battery and a single string of 8 pannels. Everything on essential. At midday loadshedding started and there was a lot running - geyser, pool pump, dryer.. Around 6Kw load, PVs producing around 3.2 Kw, the balance being drawn from the battery. Battery dropped from 60% SOC to around 30% in half an hour, then over the next 5 minutes it dropped to 0%. The inverter was set to shutdown at 20% but I think the drop happened too fast for the inverter to catch it. My questions are : Should the inverter have caught this? Will the battery be ok? Does this indicate a battery or inverter problem? Everything appears to be running ok now, but am worried about the battery. I intend putting the geyser on non-essential load.
June 2, 20233 yr Your asking way too much of the battery. You need to work out the Kwh you need for loadshedding and size the battery for that. The battery should have protected itself.
June 3, 20233 yr Author Thanks, Will be taking the geyser off essential load, this should bring it within acceptable range to protect the battery. Am wondering why the inverter didnt switch off at 20% as it is configured to do and can only guess that the drop happended too fast. Thumbs crossed the battery is ok, seems to be ok today.
