Question for COJ post paid users

There is no consistency, often it is an Estimate, we have tried sending in a photo, it worked a few months ago but now that also seems to be a waste of time as they don't use the reading, a mess!

How does your meter get read?

https://www.e-joburg.org.za/ works well for me for CoJ.

Occasionally they'll still do an (over)-estimate. Occasionally (especially when it's been a sunny month!) they don't beleive me and come and audit.

But 95% of the time they accept my reading verbatim and that's the figure that appears on the statement along with the text "actual reading", as long as the meter image I upload is clear and includes both the reading and the meter number.

One of my neighbours tells me that the post-paid meters are supposed to upload over the cell network. She had a string of high estimates and called CP. They sent a guy out, and all he did was fit a little booster antenna. Since then peace and harmony has reigned (in that particular realm)

Jay - we have the I-Tron "Smart Meter" (see attachment) & recently have even been using a Newspaper for the date (for whatever that's worth!) when submitting the photo. Our smart meter was not supplied with the "In House Unit" so we need to go outside to the meter box on the pavement to read & photograph it.

Presently we have a "dispute" with COJ regarding our billing & have reported it to the Ombudsman (over 8 months ago!) Still waiting for dispute to be resolved as we would like to change to a Pre-paid contract, but COJ says they will not change the contract until we pay the disputed/outstanding amount (or sign an acknowledgement of debt!)

Would a photo of this quality be accepted from your experience?

My meter actually also has a light for 'network' (which I assume is Cell Network) though I've never seen it illuminated, maybe they need to do some set-up (or maybe a booster would sort it out like your in your neighbour's case)!

I'd think so. I normally go for a bit more clarity but both reading and meter number are 100% legible here so I'd imagine this would be fine!

Do you know what make of meter your friend has? (is it same as in photo above?) Also, please can you get me the phone No. of the CP person she contacted, as we have had (over) estimated readings for the last 5 months even though we have been sending in photo's!

We are in Vorna Valley (Midrand) & the meter is an I-Tron EM420i. Not sure where to get phone number for CP in our area, but if we get to speak to any CP worker that's helpful I think they could tell us who to call?

Hi there. I can tell you it wasn't an Itron. I saw her photos, and I know it wasn't the Itron because I once had one of those. She's not anybody I know well, but I will try. I got this information from a post in our suburb page on FB, so I will have to find that again.

It is likely that she dealt with somebody at the Randburg depot. I've had good responses from that depot when I've gone there in person, but they may not want to get involved with Midrand. NB! I didn't deal with COJ, I went straight to the City Power depot for our area. They have a dedicated team who just resolve meter-related issues and they are quite quick (when they can get stock). The first time I went this route was when my pre-paid meter failed after power was restored. I left the depot at about 8:30 that morning, and 11:30 there was a ring on my door bell and they restored my supply.

Try searching for "City Power" near you in Google Maps.
