Assistance neede with system specification

Featured Replies

Good day all, I need some assistance please.  We live on a small-holding just outside Paarl and cable-theft is driving us bonkers.  Load shedding is one thing but cable-theft typically leaves us without electricity for at least 18 hours per pop.  We’ve been again without electricity on Easter Friday… – so I need to look at some options – but before going to contractors I thought it would be good to ask some objective advice from the forum.  I need some assistance in terms of an off-grid system (not connected to EKOM anymore) specification for our current 60A single phase connection.  Our electricity demand is typical of a big household – approximately 500-700 kwh per month or approximately 18-24 kwh per day (we run some water pressure pumps and sewage pumps).

We are in close proximity of a wind-farm and consider wind as a viable option. I was thinking of the following:

 16 x 330w Canadian solar panels

2 x Victron Smart Solar MPPT 250/100 TR

Victron colour control panel

Victron Quattro 48/15kva-200-100/100

600w Kestrel turbine with regulator to harvest wind at night (to be plugged into second port of Quattro)

BlueNova 52v-154-8k battery pack

Thoughts and comments please!  I consider this as an investment and would like to go with good quality components.

Many thanks

Willem

Roughly 5kWp of PV, divided by 50V, that's 100A. You could possibly get away with just one charge controller. But that is on the limit. I assume you're thinking of a 4-series 4-parallel setup?

Get a Venus-GX. Unless you really want the eye candy 🙂

I'm unsure what you're trying to do here? The Quattro has two inputs, but they are meant for two 230VAC sources. Usually one is used for grid and the other one a generator. A wind turbine usually generates 3-phase wild-AC (frequency dependent on wind speed) and this is generally stored in the batteries by using a rectifier and a charge controller (usually including a brake mechanism).

Other than those small few things, I like your idea.
