Hi I would like to ask for some advice. I have an MPP Solar MPI 10K three-phase hybrid inverter, and I want to build a grid-connected system with zero export. What equipment do I need for the system, and how should I connect the AC side from the grid to the inverter? I would appreciate it if someone could explain the AC wiring and the necessary protection devices step by step. Thank you in advance

It's a very open-ended question, so before you get any answers to your questions, you need to share some information.

  • Budget: ball-park figure.

  • Do you plan to do the installation yourself? Are you qualified / skilled enough to do so?

  • Do you know what your current and planned utilisation is?

    • Do you know what loads you want to cover? What are they (in kW)?

    • Partial coverage or full? This is 3 phase, so how are your loads currently split on the various phases?

  • Have you planned for Storage?

    • What technology?

      • High voltage or low-voltage batteries?

    • How much storage?

  • Have you planned for generation?

    • What technology? Solar / wind ?

    • How much?

    • Do you have North-facing roof space available, or are you envisaging a ground installation?

These and a lot of other questions need some answers before someone can help you with the actual equipment and protection devices needed. There are many, and they all depend on your design.

If I were you, I'd speak to an expert at Powerforumstore, give Wimpie or Steve a call, they can design a system for you with everything that you need, down to the last bolt and nut.

After doing some research, it seems that:

  1. The MPP Solar MPI 10K three-phase hybrid inverter will need an optional "Energy meter" in the form of Modbus card II inserted in the inverter’s "Intelligent Slot". It does not support a simple CT coil, like many of its competitors.

  2. If you are planning to use lithium battery storage, BMS comms is important, but lithium battery support on the MPI 10K is provided by a separate BMS RS485 card, also fitted in the (singular) "Intelligent Slot". So if it is already occupied by the aforementioned, you will need to use voltage to control the inverter's knowledge of State-of-Charge (SoC), which could be inaccurate and the inverter cannot respond to BMS protection events.

Edit: It does seem that there is a RS-485 BMS Box option which uses the RS-485 port on the inverter to provide BMS comms vs the card version.
