Solar Panel Selection and Wiring

Featured Replies

Good Day,

Can someone please help me with selecting and wiring of solar panels.

I am in the process of installing a solar system into my house. And have got the following installed and running:

  • 1x Growatt SPF5000Tl Inverter
  • 1x Pylontech US3000C Battery
  • Lights and a select few plugs wired to the inverter (Done correctly by an electrician)

Pardon my ignorance, but I would like some assistance with regards to the solar panels. I have been told that 4x high wattage (400W-460W) panels will be more than sufficient to charge the battery during the day. There is no load on the system during the day when we are at work.

From what I understand, the MPPT charger of the inverter can handle the following:

  • MPPT Voltage Range: 60Vdc-115Vdc (Max 145Vdc)
  • Default Charging Current: 60A (Max 140A)

The battery suggests the following:

  • Charge Voltage: 52.5V-53.5V
  • Charge Current: 37A

Do I give priority to Voltage or Amperage when wiring up the panels? Lets assume the panels are 40V/10A, do I wire them:

  1. In series to get a 160V/10A,
  2. Parallel to get 40V/40A,
  3. Series + Parallel to get 80V/20A (I am assuming this is the best option)

I have over specified the invert to be a 5Kva, with the intention of adding another battery an more panels at a later stage, much later ;)

I would appreciate any assistance with regards to the matter.

Your choice is only limited to option 2 and 3. Forget option 1 because you MPPT operating voltage range is 60Vdc to 115Vdc and your Max open circuit voltage is 145Vdc. So wiring the panels to give you 160v is asking for trouble

Both options will charge your battery but I don't think four panels will be enough to get it to 100%.
