I have a 1k RCT for my internet and the fan drove me nuts. I emailed Firstshop and they approved a return and 'fixed' it, but it made no difference.
I tinkered a bit, warranty now void, but I have not heard the fan since said tinkering. A big contributor to the noise is the mesh covering the fan, so I cut that out. I also installed a fan that runs a bit quieter, but I don't think it has actually come on yet.
The biggest problem it seems is the heatsink to which the thermal sensor is connected, it needs some breathing room... while testing the new fan I left the cover off and the fan wouldn't come on. Put the cover back and not 2 minutes and the fan is spinning like a Chihuahua with rabies. Cover off, no fan for hours.
I took the cover, removed a few bits and I can honestly say I have not heard the fan come on yet. My RCT is now a R||||. The heat sink is just to the left of the vents.

    Very well done
To think that batteries might end up getting tossed away for stupid reasons like this
Great thing about lithium batteries is how recyclable they are

In the future you may want to try consult a electronic repair shop
You said that allowing the battery to drain did not clear the unit memory, electronic repair shop may be able to wipe the storage without affecting the operation (normally stored separately on a ROM chip).

I don't think that's even remotely close to what I said
But yes, the majority of batteries will end up at Durban harbour. Supplier's I spoke to were not able to organize DDP to SA - you're mileage may vary
Freight is charged min. per cubic meter, ~ 20 cells as a minimum order quantity. If you can't get DDP you need to organize customs and transport from Durban

I'd be keen to setup a group order from China if the economics make sense
Not too scared about making up my own batteries from prismatic cells with a decent BMS.

Something about batteries just makes me want to hoard kWh like its gold

This may be off topic but you don't give random companies "a chance".
They prove they are legitimate and worth your consideration.
With EFT, you'll have a heck of a time getting any of that money back. Thats why not offering credit card purchases is a massive red flag
