Atti2de got a reaction from Juokorow in 6 Parallel vs. 12 Series Solar panelsHey @Super_mil, Thank you for the comments!
I am stuck with the 1 large series string! The higher voltage seems to favor the MPPT chargers...

Atti2de got a reaction from phil.g00 in Good value good PV Panel mounts for IBR roofHey @phil.g00!
There is a supplier, named Antsolar, which is kicking butt in the pricing arena. Try her! She also has all the different mountings, etc.

Atti2de got a reaction from ___ in Earth leakage trips intermittently - cannot find reason@Antony, the main thing on your earth leakage CB to look out for is the leakage current. Seems like 20mA there.
Are you sure that you don't have a neutral somewhere touch the earth inadvertently?
What I found is oxidation (rust) on the top of my oven connectors. The neutral wire had melted(!!!!) partially and started to rust. This in turn caused a periodic leak to the earth and subsequently gave me erratic trips.
Has the frequency in tripping shorted (happened more often) or could it be ok for a week and then trip?

Atti2de got a reaction from Chris Hobson in 6 Parallel vs. 12 Series Solar panelsHey Antony!
Yeah there is a spike but that isn’t the kettle. It is my wife with her ninja hair dryer! Hehe

Atti2de got a reaction from Antony in Cost to heat a litre of water using gas versus EskomHi there Antony,
I am using tubes; they are apparently more effective.
The geyser is used as warm water storage only and circulation/ temp regulation is done using a Resol CS with an MK2 module (the visualization and logging). Connected via VBUS.
There is no element nor thermal switch used. Saving in energy use alone is about 3kW for the heating.

Atti2de got a reaction from ___ in 6 Parallel vs. 12 Series Solar panelsKLEVA, that makes complete sense to me. After tomorrow I will change it to 1x12 panel string and validate.
I can see that the solar panels managed to produce 12.4kWh today. Admittedly the generation stopped at 13:00 as the load was low and the batteries fully charged. I then removed the feedback limit at about 15:00.
Will see how it goes tomorrow. For today, I have produced more than what was used.

Atti2de reacted to KLEVA in 6 Parallel vs. 12 Series Solar panelsI am prepared to put some money on the fact that the higher Voltage will win out... Lower wire resistance (lower amps, higher voltage), better choices for the MPPT controller to make (the bigger the range it has much more chance to get the best kW out of panels). From recently acquired knowledge and experience, the closer you can get to the max MPPT range the better. I was running about 180V on a string and was getting pathetic results, and when I jumped to 300+ V on a string I got closer to the panel rated values because the MPPT could work closer to it's best. R10 bucks, payable in reputation points?

Atti2de reacted to Chris Hobson in PV Array Sizing ToolI have been designing systems and discovered that clients can change the goalposts sometimes more than once a day. I was using the Midnight solar sizing tool and ended up tired of re-entering panel specs. So I designed my own.
The yellow fields are for the user to alter. There is a drop down list of inverters and if your inverter is not on the list you can go to the inverter sheet and add your own specs. The same with panels there is a open column to add your specific panels. Canadian solar 260W and probably 265W are set to disappear from our shores so I will remove them from the list and add others.
Having set you inverter then you can set minimum and maximum temperature. Remember these are panel temperatures and although panel minimum and ambient minimum will be the same panel maximum is likely to be 20-30°C higher than ambient temp. Minimum temperatures are important as panels voltages INCREASE with lower temperatures. I know several folk who exceed their SCC's Vmaxbut if you want to do it by the book this spreadsheet will help you. When your panels Vmp is below the MPPT minimum you are warned with pink text as this may or may not be a problem.
You can then play around with number of panels per string and number of strings to find a combination that works for your inverter.
