January 21, 20233 yr Getting the Axpert VM 1kw 12v. Going to be hooked up with 12v diy build. Couple questions regarding its features: What does output factor of 1 mean? What is/does battery equilization do? It has rs.. Port for comms. Is it worth while getting a bms that can service this? Thanks in advance

It just means that while it's rated at 1000 VA (e.g. 230 V at 4.3 A), it can also handle a 1000 W load continuously. Some models are so-called PF0.8, meaning that while they can output 1000 VA, they can only output 800 real watts (e.g. a motor with a power factor of 0.8 could draw 800 W but 1000 VA). Essentially, it's a marketing thing. They're all PF1 now; the earliest models had limitations in the battery DC-DC stage that limited them to PF0.8. The idea is that with 6 cells in series, if one is a little less charged than the others, you over charge the battery so that even the cell with the lowest charge gets to full. All the other cells generate hydrogen and oxygen (no smoking nearby), and you just replace the water lost thereby in regular maintenance. If you have a sealed lead acid battery, or a lithium based battery, you don't usually use equalisation at all. However, it can be adapted to somewhat work around an issue that I call the premature float bug. In this case, you set the equalisation voltage to the same as the bulk charge voltage, and you set the equalisation to happen every day or every second day, so you can fully charge the battery despite the bug. But it's really a virtual RS-232 port using USB signalling. It depends on what battery you have. Almost any battery requires some sort of balancing. Any lithium based battery absolutely will require a battery management system of some sort. But a single 12 V lead acid module can't really be balanced.
January 24, 20233 yr Author Hi thanks for the feed back. I can confirm the inverter has both the printer type usb and an rs232 port which looks like a lan cable socket to pins It came with both cables
