I've  bought a cheap chinese grid-tie inverter with exactly that in mind.

With an unmounted panel I am planning on tripping the load-side MCB, and I'll be doing a few tests on the meter in situ, when I am next in SA.

Unfortunately, I cant remember the type of meter it is, at the moment.

What I do remember is it's not a disc type ( worse luck), but it wont have the capability of internally switching the supply (it's not physically big enough), and there is no mechanism to trigger any "tamper" signal ( it's too rural).

I just want to know it that I wont be charged for exporting into the grid (which is what I strongly suspect).

There is  load on the grid side of the inverter's proposed grid-tie in point. I have nothing against sending the grid a few watts that may make in out the gate for free, but I am loathe to be charged for extra usage. Its a 13K pm bill as it is.

I have ordered a R-Pi and I picked up a CG meter on ebay, and some Zigbees on aliexpress, if I need to set up an ESS.
