January 15, 20197 yr APC 750XL Smart UPS with extended battery box for sale. The main UPS has 2 x 17Ah batteries and the extended box has 4 x 17Ah batteries. The batteries are now 4 years old but still hold a fair amount of charge. When fitted with new batteries, the UPS ran for just over 4 and a half hours with load of approximately 250W. The built-in battery charger is designed for external battery packs, so the recharge time is under 2 hours. I am in Vredehoek, Cape Town.

I am wondering if it is possible to charge the batteries via Solar. It might be challenging as it has an external battery. Does it deplete the internal batteries before switching over to the extended batteries? Would love to hook solar up to this some how. Thanks all, any ideas? Sincerely Jason
January 22, 20197 yr Author Hi Jason The internal batteries are connected directly to the batteries in the external battery box - so they all charge/discharge at the same rate. The UPS operates as 24V system, so 3 parallel sets of two 12V batteries in series (when one includes the 4 batteries in the external battery box). The UPS does not have any direct support for an external Solar charger, but one could theoretically connect a 24V Solar Charger to the battery bank. I have never done this so cannot give any assurance how well this may work in practice.

I wonder if one installs a blocking diode on the UPS's charger cables to the batterys to prevent any reverse flow from a solar charger. Anyway that being said what will you offer the unit for? Sincerely Jason
January 22, 20197 yr This was how my solar UPS was born. I just started with a 2.4kva inverter and 2 x 105ah batts. In this smaller configuration, 6 x 17ah for 24v bank, it has a wot, +-50ah battery bank. Off course one can run if off a small MPPT that can charge at about 5amps min, more is better, like a 75/15, for then you can run the loads daytime whilst keeping the batts charged for the evening. THE ONLY CAVEAT: UPS'es that are not the online versions, are not designed to run 24/7. And when the 17ah batts die, 2 x 60ah or go big and put 2 x 105ah on there with the panels. Just ensure:1) UPS stays cool inside at all times2) that the panels can power the load whilst keeping the batts charged3) add maybe thicker batt cables with a fuse. 🙂 Edited January 22, 20197 yr by Guest
