Plug the USB cable into your computer, the other end into the inverter and then start the program...

If you inverter doesn't have USB it is a very, very old inverter.  Then you'll need a USB -> serial converter.  That one I linked appears to be a "Prolific" brand converter and they are pretty much the best you'll get and work perfectly.  Be careful of the really cheap ones.
