Axpert MEX 1.5KVA PV Max query

Featured Replies

Hi

My neighbour has installed one of these units. They're very limited power wise, and 12V only. The solar charger is 40A max, and there's a 500W max spec on the PV input. My question is whether more PV can be installed than the 500W max? Obviously the unit will can only supply 500W, but it would be useful to have more capacity for cloudy days, and early/late hrs etc. Question is will it just max out at 500W at midday, or go poof with say 900W of panels installed? :)   Specs attached.

Cheers

Ian

The inverter-charger won't go poof, but the undershoots and especially the over-shoots of battery voltage could be a problem. The control algorithm will be designed for 500 W, and will be twitchy with 900 W attached.

I would not recommend it. He could add a separate solar charge controller, connected directly to the battery. There are plenty inexpensive models to choose from, e.g. from Ebay.
