I've gone through the Ekurhuleni municipality's documents on SSEG requirements and have noticed that quite a lot of due diligence is required in addition to NRS and SANS regulations. Is it really worth the headache going grid tied if the benefits are so small? Main motivation for the desire to go grid tied was to avoid battery costs while reducing my monthly bill.
January 17, 20224 yr Hi Grandmaster. I have checked the ekurhuleni sseg documents for application for installation. It's a mission. Am I allowed to do my own installation as I do have skill, but do not possess a pv greencard certification.

I also had a look at the Ekhuruleni application forms it is not electrician friendly but quite a lot of documents and sign offs that’s needed. Documents look a bit extreme for a simple little installation. I am also interested in this process and am not sure if they might even require such documents for off-grid installations.

Not sure about the small benefits. The pay back can be 2-2.5 years vs a 6-8 years when you add batteries to balance the savings over a 24 hour period instead of only during the sunshine period of the day. Assuming your tool is a hybrid inverter that can work with or without a battery the cost for generation 1kwh per day for a 270W panel is about R1400. Adding a lithium battery to save this same 1kwh adds about R5000 to the cost. Thus grid tied mode R1400 vs R6400 per kWh with battery although you buy the convenience of power during LShed/power failures.
