Seeking advice on setting up a solar system

Featured Replies

Hi everyone. I'm busy investigating setting up a solar system at my place. I have a few challenges, including the majority of my roof currently being taken up by my pool heating system, limiting the amount of space available for panels.

I currently use between 600 - 700 kwH per month and had been planning on around 7kw if panels, a Sunsynk 5/8 kW inverter and starting off with around 6kwH of lithium battery storage.

I've had an installer out who's provided me with the following quotes (and is advocating I use EVO batteries).  I'm looking for guidance from more experienced forumites on the costs, the total panel sizes he's recommended and whether this is an install you'd take up?.

Quotation for 8kw Sunsynk inverter, 1 x 5.7kwH Evo battery

Quotation for 2x 5kw Growatt inverters, 2 x Evo 5.7 kWh batteries.IMG_20220305_082849.thumb.jpg.a01be40b39fd3178992564953725bb48.jpg

The only info on the Evo batteries I have is what's on the attached spec sheet, I've been unable to find info online.

Installer has offered to swop out the Evo batteries for Hubble (which was my original choice) in six months time if I'm not satisfied with them.

Maybe I am wrong, but the panel and electrical installation cost seems a little high. If this is the going rate now, I need to adjust my prices. 😳 l see you mentioned that you have limited roof space. Is this installer going to do a ground mount or roof mount solar array? Perhaps the high panel installation cost is due to the additional work involved in a ground mount.
The COC price also seems a little high, but once again maybe I need to adjust my prices.

Personally I would choose the Sunsynk over the Growatt and would rather get 2 batteries instead of 1, if your budget allows.

I have never heard of Evo batteries before, but if you get a guarantee of at least 5 years, then I suppose it will be okay as the price is good. Hubble or Blue Nova would be better options in my opinion.

I don’t understand why “design fee” and “installation consumables”  are charged separately, perhaps you could get an explanation on these charges… As I see it, these should be included in the panel and electrical installation costs. But once again, maybe I need to adjust my pricing structure.

Perhaps some other members can give their opinion on these charges.

The prices looks ok for both quotations except for the CoC if you are jhb. I paid R1500 for my CoC in 2020, R4k is a bit too much, maybe you can negotiate. I would go for the second option, LuxPower or Growatt SP5000ES, you will get 10Kw instead of 8Kw, two inverters and two batteries. The installer shows confidence in the battery, if he is willing to swop with Hubble in 6 months if you are not happy. But what happens if you are not happy with Hubble after the swap? 🤔
