Deye / Sunsynk / etc ... Activate battery ?

Featured Replies

Any insight on the purpose of that option ?

Supposed to be used when installing a new lifepo4 battery ... But for how long ? 1, 10 or 100 cycles ?

What does it do precisely ?

Haven't noticed any difference in current limitation for charging & discharging when option is ticked or not ...

Not all users even in SA use this inverter only to have power. Some use it in a grid tied mode for self consumption from PV or for those that want to feed in for credits like an office installation during the day. The battery could be fully charged but then disabled for grid tied mode. When there is LS you just enable the battery for essential loads. In this mode the battery is not cycled.

Activate Battery: Activate lithium battery, when the BMS of the lithium battery is protected, battery will not power inverter or
the inverter cannot charge the battery. Choose this function to activate the protection.

Well, that's not what the illustration says & you don't have to activate the BMS : it's there, before the inverter & it will stop suppling power to the inverter in case of error ...

??? What 🤯???

Both of my quotes above are from the inverter manuals:

Activate is for the inverter/charger to recover a battery that's 100% flat and the battery BMS has shutdown.

Lithium Batteries BMS that are 100% flat will shutdown and provide 0/zero voltage.
Normally a smart charger will not provide power to the DC battery circuit that it considers to be "open" (0/zero Volts).
The Activate setting will force the charger to provide power to the DC battery circuit regardless.

I've observed this with a small BN13V-8-104Wh LiFePO4 battery that was 100% flat.
The external smart charger refused to work, until it detected a voltage.
Had to connect a 2nd battery in parallel to "jump start" the BMS and start the charging.

Well, the problem is once a BMS detects a problem, batteries deliver as much current as a piece of wood. Either you have to reset the BMS or bypass it  Then I wonder how an inverter / charger connected to such BMS could do anything.

There are obviously different kinds of BMS problems.

Activate is for a specific common problem - where the Lithium battery is fully discharged (flat) and the BMS has shutdown.
The inverter/charger will detect zero/wood voltage and not supply power to the battery.

The normal way to restart the BMS is to supply external power - which is what Activate does - provides external power.

Activate does not fix all BMS problems - just this common one.

So taking all of the above as read and understood. Should the Activate battery settings be ON or OFF under normal operating conditions i.e. daily charge to 100% discharge to 20% in a grid tied scenario?

The Sunsynk mentions of this setting are typically incomplete and only say to switch ON to help recover a fully depleted (shutdown) battery or to switch ON when installing a battery for the first time. They never mention when to switch it OFF. Presumably there is a scenario when it should be switched OFF (perhaps because having it switched on when not needed might affect 'normal' charging/discharging activities?) otherwise the functionality that this option provides would just be a default function of the inverter/BMS firmware?

Mainly use the Activate Battery setting to ON if you plan to run the battery down to 100% SOC else OFF at 80% SOC (state of charge) or as you say in your case discharge to 20%, but even in ON state shouldn't effect the functionality of the inverter or batteries
