October 1, 20223 yr I am concerned about shading from a chimney in the morning and a couple trees in the afternoon. Do people still use optimizers or are panels designed with diodes make optimizers to really needed?
October 3, 20223 yr It depends, will the hours of full sunshine be enough to charge the batteries? I had 1 x 8S string that I converted to 4S2P and it produces a lot more power (shading affects the output drastically) I have the latest JA solar half-cut 460W panels and the bypass diodes and with one panel shaded my output would fall from (4S) 1.4KW to 300W. I have seen people saying good things about optimisers but the conversion solved my problem. There is no point in generating more power than what you can use, unless you can actually export.

I'm not just concerned about charging the batteries but having maximum daytime PV to run normal home loads. I think I'll need to play around with it. Optimers seem expensive.
October 3, 20223 yr I also considered optimisers but decided against it. I settled with scheduling all loads 10am - 2pm (when I jave full sun). Even on high consumption days the battery gets full around 2-3pm

This video by the excellent & knowledgeable Andreas Spiess give some information on his experience with optimisers (at about 10min) This is the 3rd video in which he documents his PV installation - well worth a watch.
