January 19, 20233 yr I'm going to be upgrading my current battery to a Dyness BX51100 and thought it would be the perfect time to get Solar Assistant as well. I have the 5kw Sunsynk inverter. Looking at the guides on the Solar Asisstant website I will need to get the following: Pi + Software After this things start to get a bit confusing. Can I still use the SunSynk Wi-Fi dongle while using Solar Assistant? I will either have to get the USB to RS232 or USB to RS485 cable for the inverter. How do I know which to get? Do I also need to get a separate cable for the Dyness battery?

If you have a spare raspberry pi lying around you can just buy the software and install it on an sd card instead of the whole kit Yes you can use the SS dongle in conjunction with the Solar Assistant system You would need this cable for the Pi to talk to the inverter - the solar assistant pi will plug into the RS485 port on the inverter You would need this cable for the battery to talk to the Pi - its not mandatory but does offer more detailed insights. Note that the site references the 48100 series but not the 51100 so maybe confirm with them if it will work

You do not need a separate cable to connect SA to the Dyness as it will read basic battery information from your inverter (assuming that the Dyness is connected to the Sunsynk). If you do connect a separate cable, then you can read more detailed info on your battery (how-to see here)
January 19, 20233 yr Author Thank you for the replies. Just to confirm. If I do get the cable for the battery, the current cable running to the inverter will still be there. This will just be extra, running to the Pi? I will confirm with SolarAssistant about the battery Series.

My batteries are connected to my inverter as per below image, so what port do I use for the dyness-pi connection? I ask, because the message below from SA seems like you cannot have your inverter and SA both read a dyness battery BMS??? With all the battery models below, if an inverter is already reading them via CAN then SolarAssistant can not read them via RS485 at the same time. Set SolarAssistant to "Use inverter values". If an inverter is already reading the Dyness battery, then SolarAssistant can not read the battery at the same time. The battery unfortunetely doesn't support being read from multiple devices at the same time. Set SolarAssistant to "Use inverter values". I basically want to setup SA on the deye/dyness so I can have detailed BMS readings for both batteries but from what I read on the SA website, this is not possible as my inverter is already using the can/rs485 port?? So how do people use SA to get detailed battery info with Deye/Dyness combo? Does the inverter not HAVE to have the BMS info from the battery? Or do you simply connect the input port from the can/rs485 from the master Dyness to SA/pi and then connect the output from the master dyness battery can/rs485 to the slave battery and then have the inverter behave like a "dumb" inverter and not have any battery BMS info to the inverter as there will be no comms cable between the inverter and batteries, only the thick batery cables? April 17, 20233 yr If you do that, it would be using the inverter in voltage mode basically. Not recommended when you have the facility of using SoC which is much more accurate. Voltage won't be accurate for switching back to grid power etc based on the SoC like the timer does. The inverter does pick up most of the battery info though, not the cycles etc, but what its needs, it picks up. Perhaps from time to time when you want to see the detailed info u could connect the battery to the pi directly and check. Looks like you Would have to disconnect it from the inverter, make sure the setting BMS_err_stop is disabled then otherwise your inverter will cut power.

This isn't a sunsynk / deye inverter from the looks of it (see device mode) , so don't expect to get this @flyfisherman. I would rely on what solar assistant themselves are saying.

I Dunno. I jsut left it as i now and just use the inverter battery readings
