Chris Louw
If I take a heater coil of 3000 watt and shorten the coil by 20% . What will the result be . Will the consumption be 2400 ???
pilotfish
No. P=VI I = 3000/230 I = 13amps P=I^2R R=3000/169 = 18ohms If you shorten coil by 20% then the resisatnce will decrease by 20%, so R = 14.5 V=IR I = V/R = 230/14.5 = 16amps P = VI = 230 x 16 =3680W So shortening by 20% will INCREASE power by about 20%, also increase current which the wire may not be designed to carry.
