Mppt and Solar Load

Featured Replies

Hi all.

I bought a 12v/20amp acdc solar regulator. Firstly how many panels would be required to charge 2 x 12v batteries in parralel connection. I have 3 x 250w panels spares conmected in series at the moment. Is this to much? All that I am running is 10 x 5w 12v down lights. Could I connect more.

DJacobs, start here to work out what you need, re the Excel sheet. Check all the values it has, do the calcs.

Maybe take a long here also as the questions you are asking are extremely wide and difficult to answer quick without some background.

Looking at the specs this is a PWM charger, so connecting the 3 panels in series will most likely blow the charger. Rather connect them in parallel. If you are connecting 100ah battery's in parallel, you would need 20 amp charging current. The three panels can easily handle that.

Some advice. To get the most out of the panels, you might want to consider an MPPT charge controller. Something in the line of a 100/30 would work fine. Like it is now, voltages above 13.7 Volt will go to waste, whereas an MPPT could harvest that for you. If you relay consider adding more load to the setup, a MPPT might benefit you,
