New 10kWh Sunsynk not compatible with old

Hi

A friend has a 3 phase 12kw Sunsynk with a 10kwh Sunsynk battery and want to add a second battery. 

He's been told the old battery and new battery isn't compatible? Is this true? Who designs a BMS that isn't backwards compatible? 

Anyone know of "old" stock?
