It's not essential, however; several users have models where the firmware can't be updated, and seem to do OK (they just have to do some unexpected things, like set the battery cutoff setting to about 44.0 V). I can't imagine anyone living without patched firmware, but I'm perhaps a little biased, as I'm one of the authors 🙂 The patched firmware is free.
