hi

I have the Mecer inverter 3000w 

i bought an inverter generator 1200w to boost batteries but i dont see any difference and on the display the circle with wave through it does not have the dots going to bat icon and no charging light,  being a complete beginner, is there a setting i need to change?

Hi there,
You can't put the AC power directly onto the batteries. What you need is a DC charger.

If I can simplify, it would be something like this: you need a "car battery charger" that you would plug into the electricity plug and connect it to the batteries (the red and black cable) 
Hope that makes sense, so the output from your generator needs to be connected to the battery charger. That battery charger will convert the AC power into DC and change the batteries like that.
Do you know how many batteries you have in the battery bank and what is the configuration (e.g. 12V, 24V, 48V)?

If you're off-grid with a generator, you want the UTi output source priority setting (setting 01). That way as soon as you turn on the generator, it will be used to supply the loads and if you have setting 16 correct, charge the battery.

The Mecer/Axperts have a built-in DC charger; the dotted lines leading from the AC-in (orange in the image below) will go through an AC-DC converter (yellow) on the LC Display before the get to the battery (green). But you need the right settings; by default, the inverter treats AC-in as expensive grid power to be minimised; with a generator, you want to make use of the AC-in power whenever it's there, as it's costing you fuel whether you use it or not, so you'd better use it.
