Yes they do run all the time.  The speed vary for time to time as the load ect. change.

So someone once accused me of being a google engineer... to which I say... don't you guys check your facts before you repost them? Aaanyway... I googled it. It says about 4% per week. Give or take a bit for temperature and chemistry differences. In our hot summers it will be more.
In the back of my mind I seem to remember that after 6 months of no charge it will be empty and completely sulphated. Working backwards from that also gets a number somewhere between 5% and 10% per week.

It depends on your intended load usage and budget, you can get from R3k and all the way up.
You need to compare not just the price but also the battery Life Cycles vs DoD. Anything with less than 500 @ 50% is a “cheapy” and will cost you more in a year or two that the saving you will make buying them (Remember eskom is projecting 18months of pain which means 3 years😜)
Anything with 1000+ @ 50% DOD should last you a few year. Lookup up AllGrand looks promising and not badly prices at about R4400 a pop, if you have the bucks, OmniPower is a nice one too, I think they have 240AH variant too just over 7k each.
Howver, I am no expert all above is just my opinion from my journey thus far and from the esteemed residence experts information sharing readup in this forum and others.

I think you are right there P1000...load is around 2100W.
Therefore in your opinion what and how many batteries would I need.
My calcs say 4 x 200ah AGM batteries connected to a mecer axpert 5kva mks2 inverter.
I don't know what the difference is between agm and agm/gel batteries btw

I estimate 2152W for that system, so just about half of the above.

Notes: The aircon will likely draw less than that in the worst case, but I have assumed it is not a Samsung (some 12000btu samsungs are only 9000btu in cooling and use less than 1000W) and that it is way undersized for the room. I have also assumed that the laptops aren't both gaming laptops - I think my estimate would hold if one is low-mid-end-gaming and the other is watching netflix or browsing or doing office tasks. All the other estimates should be relatively conservative.
