Did anyone ever manage to get some kind of a price on this or the "geyser robot"?
Also interested if anyone has some actual technical details on "geyser robot" as their site is very thin on details.

The manufacturers of both seem to be hard to get a response from.

They're about R4k ex VAT

I think it is a good price, but if you are used to "electronics", it is possible a DIY. I did some months ago, round 100 €, R1600 ?

The geyserobot is SABS approved though so insurance claims won't be an issue.

Do you have any link/info to your DIY version? Not that I'm likely to build one DIY myself for the insurance reasons mentioned (and general anti-DIY climate in the country), but I am always interested to learn new things (all these systems seem to do things slightly differently and its interesting to see) so would love to know the details.

This is the mainly scheme:

It is needed a goog capacitor, 1 mF 400 Vdc and a ripple current higher than 10 Amps. Also is needed an IGBT or Mosfet with Vds or Vce higher than 400 Vdc.

MCU can be an Arduino, measuring current and voltage and triggering IR2121, which switch ON/OFF the gate of Mosfet or IGBT.

Do you have more info regarding the circuit and the arduino used and the arduino sketch please?

Any model arduino should work. It would be interesting to see the sketch. Also which sensors you are using to measure voltage and current.

About a year ago @plonkster wrote about cheap square wave inverters used in cars. Our residents' association installed and operate a CCTV network in our village and in one instance we used one as the camera required 230 VAC. This worked fine except that ICASA turned up one day with their top notch spectrum analyzer. They received a complaint from Telekom which has four high radio masts about 5 Km away that interference was rendering their ship to shore radio system inoperable. Turned out to be our cheap inverter and they also found a DSTV decoder with a faulty power supply in the village  So their Rhode & Swartz analyser was certainly very sensitive. Our inverter was housed in an aluminium enclosure and even that did not contain the interference. So if you are near a cellular tower, a square wave inverter had better be properly screened and earthed.
