Growatt spf5000ES limit charging current in Li Mode

In the Growatt manual it says that if Li is selected, the maximum charging current cannot be setup (Page 9). This applies to solar and utility charging.

I have a Greenrich UP5000 connected with CAN BMS to the inverter. Even though it claims to be a 2C rated battery, the Greenrich manual recommends charging at 0.5C (48A) for better cycle life. 

At the moment the inverter is charging the battery at maximum capacity, which is putting unnecessary strain on the battery.

Has anyone found a workaround for this to limit the charging current? A firmware update/external charge controller/current limiter/DIY Mosfet circuit?

I would prefer not to have to disable the BMS just to be able to control the charging rate.

Getting a second battery might help as the inverter can only charge upto 5kw even if you had 4 batteries. 

Just to be sure you are saying the inverter is charging the one battery at 5kw? Or 4 point something kw?

The Growatt Li Protocol applies the Battery BMS paramaters for Program codes 2, 19, 20 and 21.  21 can be overridden.
There is only one workaround and that is to go to USE or US2 mode and set these paramaters manually.
Your BMS will still manage the battery charge as long as you set your Inverter according to the Battery specs.

Unfortunately not once you select Li Protocol.  Only in manual modes.

Yes it's around 4 point something kw based on what I see on the shinephone app.

Thank you! I had assumed using a custom mode would basically mean disabling the BMS so that it would use voltage levels instead of the BMS communication to manage the charging. This solves my problem.😀

Also just to add there is no setting on the battery to set the charge rate.

The BMS max charge rate is preset by the manufacturer and can't be changed. This max charge rate is what is communicated to the Inverter when in Li Protocol.
You as a user of a Growatt Inverter can only reduce that if in manual voltage control mode.
