Chris Hobson
I see Rubicon are taking pre-orders for Powerwalls and Solar Edge Inverters. No costs are available on the website. I think we talking serious Tom.
Mike
i think the powerwall is 3kw at R58k..way too much right now....
Soviarc
Would the Tesla Powerwall 6.4kWh and InfiniSolar 5kW be a good match for a load shedding solution, albeit an expensive one? (Optionally adding PV array later on...)
Guest
Some other people have done some sums. The Powerwall is awesome for the person who has the cash, and does not want to be bothered with maintenance. For the rest, who wants to get dirty, a good lead acid battery bank is not only cheaper, but will last longer, I read. Or so I have read. Mike
over a R100k for the battery alone and guaranteed for max 10 years only if monitored by Tesla 24 hours a day via internet! then the next question will it work with the Infini. I believe it has propriety software management that not all inverters can signal a startup, and you have about a 5 second delay before power up. Any one else heard this? Chris Hobson
One of my neighbours who has sold a large portion of his farm is ordering a Tesla - will see.
Guest
I have read of off-grid homeowners, no grid just sun and generators, that have a useful life of 15 years+ from lead acid. The max discharge and discharge rate small print of the Tesla must be studied. That is, if they don't pull the next range also. But still, cudo's to Tesla for no-one has been able to get the world this excited about batteries, that even the SWAMBO likes the look of, like they did - 10/10. Weasel
I don't think this is at all feasible at this stage, and i still don't really see definitive specs. But it seems to be 7kwh cap for the small one and a 48V output? its rated at 2kw continuous and 3.3kw peak ? anyway lets say its 48V that makes it a 145Ah bank. now granted you have pretty much 100% dod so we have to compare it to a 300Ah lead acid at least, actually lets say 450 ah for the same 10 year life.. some US XC2200 FLA batteries will set you back 46k for 464Ah 48V bank. http://usbattery.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/usb_2200_data_2015_WEB.pdf The Us bat doesn't spec a max discharge but its safe to say 75A in a string since they list it as a 2 hour rate. so that's 2 stings 75A each at 48V equals 7200W peak. Win to FLA. I've used the "usable" capacity as the midpoint for a comparison so its not really fair to say this but the actual capacity for FLA in this case would be "22kwh" versus the 7 of the Tesla, I for one would rather have the extra capacity in case i needed it so that's in my book another FLA win. and what is the price? mike said R58K? that's another win for flooded lead acid. So positives for Tesla i must probably mention as well, um.. no maintenance, it will take less space and look nice next to your iMac. One last thing i recon i must put out there is that we all have smarty phones these days with lithium batteries.. So tell me when did you realize that your phone doesn't go a full day anymore without charging in between. No more than two years i'd say. Soviarc
Phoned around a lot today and it seems you can't get the Tesla Powerwall from any local supplier without the SolarEdge inverter. Also has to be installed by Tesla Powerwall/SolarEdge certified team. The 5kW SolarEdge + Tesla Powerwall will set you back R116k, taking the SolarEdge at R42k, the Tesla is R74k...so not quite R100 Mike. If the exchange was better, this would be a no brainer for me...but the price at the moment is the prohibiting factor, maybe at R10 a dollar it would make some sense... Mike
when i did the installer course we all had to sign non disclosure agreements....... i cannot yet install them as we all have to have liability cover of a minimum of R10mil. took me some time to sort out and they gave us 2 weeks.... so next batch next month i think. i really don't see many being sold tho....there is a lot more to them than just the price, the marketing has been good, the delivery.......not so much
