Maintenance: Lead Acid Batteries

Hi and thanks for your help.

I have 4 x 12V, 180Ah batteries for my 48V 5000W inverter. The batteries are reconditioned cell tower batteries.

I suppose maintenance is much like car batteries. Do I only need to regularly check and top up (when necessary) battery water with distilled water or should I also check acidity?

*I know some will immediately suggest LiPo batteries but they are currently out of my financial reach.

Just be carefull about which type of tower batteries you have. The older types was lead acid and Gel type batteries. If they are Gel type do not put distilled water or acid in. Picture of the Gel type battery. If they do not have screw out caps they are Gel type or Agm. Don't confuse vent caps with filler caps. Below picture of Gel type telecommunications standby battery.

To answer the question. You never add acid when adding water. Thus it means you don't use acid/water premix sold by dealers.

Thanks. These batteries are definitely lead acid.
