How to disconnect from Eskom

Featured Replies

I've decide to pull the plug - literally but also figuratively.

Based on my quick google search the easiest would be an email #DCE submitting a disconnection request.

I've send an email this morning but need some advice / guidance from someone that went through this recently.

Hallo Marius

Please let us know if you were able to get disconnected from the municipal grid, and also which municipality. With the ongoing thread of a costly basic charge, I am also considering the same, because I am not prepared to keep on subsidizing illegal connections, nor non-paying municipalities.

I'm with Eskom direct and would also like to know how to go about disconnecting. I'm first going to add another inverter and batteries and see how it goes through this winter and then will take the plunge. I currently pay about R300 a month for electricity but seeing I have solar system I will end up paying more basic charges than electricitiy charges. Hell no.

Anyone having done this please update us on how it went and procedure.

Ok seeing that I'm not a direct eskom customer above email is not relevant.

Need to Cancel with municipality.

Hey Marius,

Good on you for making the move—it's something a lot of us are seriously considering, especially with the basic charge creeping higher while actual consumption drops thanks to solar. I'm not a direct Eskom client either, so I had to go the municipal route like you're planning. In my case (Stellenbosch), I had to submit a written request with proof of ownership and ID, plus a photo of the meter showing the final reading. Took about two weeks to finalize, including someone coming out to seal the meter.

Let us know which municipality you're dealing with—processes can vary quite a bit.

I've not pulled the plug as yet... Also did not read any posts, see below on what I've learned so far.

Based on my checks one indeed need to physically visit a walk-in center. Direct Eskom customer can google this, [email protected] with specific subject line #DCE

Subject: #DCE Gauteng

Email to: [email protected]

With details below

How to cut your grid connection in South Africa

Big electricity price increases make it attractive for South African households and businesses to become electricity-independent and kiss Eskom goodbye.
